Race Horse Owner Question and Answer, featuring Kent Kaworski, Illinois
Jan 2, 2009. Thanks Kent!
How did you first become interested in owning a race horse?
I became interested after attending races instead of going to class back in my college days.
Tell us about your most memorable moment as an owner.
I was at the track to watch a horse im partners in run his 3rd or 4th race as a two yr old. The Regulars that hang at the track indicated to me the he was not a very good horse nor would he ever be.Well standing in the winners circle and getting my picture taken that day was wonderful and the next race out he won again ..needless to say I dont hear from the Regulars anymore about Daniels Magic.
Is there anything you know now you wish you'd known before you bought your first horse?
That winning a race is not an easy task for a horse no matter how good he or she may be, and the Club GM should tell you these things not promise you easy street .. ITS Not Easy to win - but if your lucky and do , its like a feeling you cant describe with words ..
If you had one piece of advice to give new owners what would it be?
I would encourage them to "interview" the General Manager of the club. Ensure you get along with him and try contacting him or her 3-4-5 times by phone or email and see how long they take to respond.I have waiting days for answers to questions and my new clubs its minutes if they dont answer the phone . they call you back asap!
What do you look for in a partnership (if never in a partnership, a trainer)?
The partnership im in has a great trainer - you can go to barn whenever, and the trainer always spends time with us and answers any and all questions. Make sure they arrange barn tours and have passes on race day! those little things sure add up . Good Luck to all!
